So I need to give big ups to StartupNation for doing the right thing.

Last night I was reading through their "10 Steps to Open For Business" and step 9 was about branding. On page three, they discuss (very briefly) creating a logo. How suprised was I to find that directly following their advice to set your business apart and create a unique brand, they provide as their official "Resources" two links: one to LogoWorst and one to TemplateMonster.

I emailed them to explain why this was maybe not a good idea, and this morning this is how they responded:

quote:

"Hi Jessica,

Thanks for your interest in StartupNation, and for taking the time to
write to us about our listing of LogoWorks at our site. We appreciate
your diligence in pointing this out and explaining why it's a concern.
We've reviewed the article you sent along, as well as your comments, and
decided to remove the link to both LogoWorks and TemplateMonster from
our site..."

I rarely do things like write strongly worded emails (actually, my email was very complimentary and simply explained the issues at hand), but it was fabulous to know that they actually listened. It's also is reassuring to see that some people do care about doing the right thing.

So here's to StartupNation, which does happen to be a great resource!

Wow, I'm impressed. I really respect people who listen to the advice/complaints of others...and really consider whether it might be valid. I think it's all too easy for people just to blow off criticism.

Good job being part of the solution!

I honestly expected to get a canned "thanks for your comments, we'll look at 'em when we feel like it" response. I was pleasantly surprised when I read their email. I agree that it's wonderful when companies really listen to their customewr base—and I do think a lot of it was in the approach. I assumed that they didn't know any better, and I explained the reasons why they may want to reconsider the link. I also pointed them to an article about LogoPoop on Creative Lattitude to back up my opinion.

It just goes to show that all it takes is a few minutes and a logical approach. Sometimes.

Now if you could only send a strongly worded e-mail to Kotex...

Good for you Jessie!  I've been meaning to send a few carefully worded e-mails myself, but I always wind up putting it off until it's too late (or I'm beyond caring anymore).

That's fabulous! One can make a difference! We should write them thank you notes.

They've just become my newest bookmark and I don't even know what they're offering.

Interesting...

I've been a participant over at Startup Nation for some time now - ever since I was made aware of it when I opened my business bank account at WaMu a couple years ago. They initiated their online community/forum earlier this year. I hadn't seen the LogoWorst link previously or I certainly would have made some "noise" about it. I looked through things early on before getting involved and at that time there was a link to the design firm that created the Startup Nation logo - but nothing else. Glad you caught the LW mention, brought it to their attention and got the positive response.

The site is a great source of business information.

- J.
