I don't know how many of you get mailings from the Art Directors Club, but there's some heated discussion going on in some designers' discussion groups about their latest award show call for entries:

I just got the full-size print version in the mail and it is quite... er... something.

As a photographer, I can't help but notice how many photographers are there in the image, snapping away at all the madness. Or is it a statement that a proliferation of photographers is contributing to the impending "end times"??

Just thought I'd post this and see if y'all had seen it, and get other designers' thoughts on it. Does it offend you? Do you think it's effective? Do you think it's well-done? Etc...

Uh, hmmm. I guess it's not what I expect for a call-for-entries, that's for sure.

To me, it just looks like they attempted to cram any social or political situation that is going on into one image.

You have to read the whole thing in context to get it. The whole theme is "hurry up and submit your work, time is running out, because THE WORLD IS GOING TO END, WE'RE ALL SCREWED!!"

I thought it was pretty funny.

I agree with Frank - it's not what I'd expect for a "Call For Entries" piece, but it doesn't offend me. But then again, not much offends me.

I noticed that the photographers all appear to be shooting the same subject (more or less)... the green humvee.  Given the driving habits of some of our younger celebrities, I had wondered if maybe they were intended to represent paparazzi shooting an out-of-control celebrity.

Aside from that, I had also wondered if maybe the artist was trying to make a point about how EVERYTHING these days seems to be caught (by amateur and professional photographers alike) on film, tape, video, etc.... But if that had been the case, I think he/she might have used some images of people taking photos/video using their cell phones, etc.

In any case, I love it.  I'd love to see what people are saying about it if you feel like sharing the links to the other discussion groups.

I got the poster about 3 weeks ago. I didn't seen anything offensive, but I think it is ugly. It got tossed in the recycle bin right away.

It might be worth mentioning that they seem to have a bit of a history of choosing somewhat controversial concepts for their calls for entry:

one optinion about their 2005 CFE
and another

Ugly or not, it seems to get people talking.

I don't find it offensive (takes a lot more than that to offend me too), but I think the concept was stronger than the execution. JMHO.

Here is a link to one opinion/discussion of this year's CFE. I've seen a lot of discussion on a couple of e-mail lists I subscribe to.

I've been reading a bit about the artist who did the piece, Norbert Kox. Now i know why the name was familiar -- I've seen his work at the Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. Knowing a bit more about him gave the piece more meaning, to me at least.

I liked the "end of the world" theme, but I thought all the giant crosses that several of the world destroyers were wearing were a little dumb.

I did think the social commentary was cool, though...the SUV's, Bluetooth earpieces, Starbucks cups, polar bear adrift on the ice floe, floods, Wal-Mart, etc.

I hadn't even noticed all the photographers. I'll have to get it out of the recycle bin and take another look.

I guess that shows how impressed I was. I keep all the nice call for entries and other posters and stuff sent by paper companies, but I didn't care much for this one. I like this style of art, and I felt he could have done a better job at pinpointing the ills of society rather than taking cheap shots at religion.

That illustration is crap. Looks like a high school student piece.

I'm not really offended by it, even though it looks like some type of anti-Christian propaganda piece. Not sure what the coffee-drinking-Humvee-driver crushing the minister-helping-a-hurt-person is supposed to represent. Seems like some oddly-baked ideas from someone on LSD.

As far as the Image for an ADC 'Call For Entries' poster, seems like some sort of ironic poke at lame art. I'm not sure they will gain more entries by using that technique - but I guess it's worth a try.

I figured it was intentionally crappy.

I thought it was suppose to be a priest being a pedophile...I could be wrong. I wasn't offended by the piece, but I wasn't impressed with it either. I agree the illustration was crappy - perhaps done on purpose, but the font choice was clumsy and to tell you the truth, if there is going to be any social/political allusions I want them to be clever and smart with the execution. Now if he maybe did it in the style of Bosch, it would have been more interesting to me.

That's how I interpreted it as well.

BTW, Does anyone else think that one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse bears a striking resemblance to Gandalf of LOTR?

I see more offensive content in newspaper movie ads. But my goodness, it's sure ugly.
