Wal-Mart to revamp logo at its US stores
By JON GAMBRELL |Associated Press Writer
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The familiar logo of the world's largest retailer is getting a makeover.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Sunday the company will begin replacing logos on the front of its U.S. stores with a new design beginning this fall. Wal-Mart spokesman Kevin Gardner said the change would reflect changes customers already have seen in some store signs and advertisements.

"This logo update is simply a reflection of the refreshed image of our stores and our renewed sense of purpose of helping people save money so they can live better," Gardner said in a written statement.

Gardner said he had no other information about the change. However, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that the new look would include eliminating the hyphen in the company's name, now shown as a star at its more than 3,600 U.S. stores. The new logo would show company's name in white letters on an orange background, followed by a small starburst, the Journal reported, based on an artist's rendering filed with planning officials in Memphis, Tenn.

The revamped logo comes as Wal-Mart continues to tweak its image after facing criticism from union-led groups and local communities across the nation opposed to big-box store developments. In the time since, the company has launched a marketing campaign highlighting its environmentally focused practices and efforts to make health care more affordable for customers through a discounted prescription drug program.

Still, Wal-Mart's low-cost advantage remains what draws customers as questions persist about the strength of the U.S. economy.

Sam Walton started Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart in 1962, opening a single store in nearby Rogers. The company's logo once included lasso-like script, still seen on older tractor-trailers and distributing centers throughout Arkansas and elsewhere.

The company said it last tweaked its logo in 1992. Customers remain most familiar with its current incarnation, a white block-type logo lit against a deep blue background, red lines above and below.

Brand New caught up to you Lauren.

For the record, I'm not a fan of the new logo.

It's a Wingding! Still, better than looking like the Sheriff of Tackytown.

Has anyone noticed that Wal*Mart is trying to be more like Target in their slightly more upscale advertising? I remember the old circulars that featured their store employees as models... Hot!

They've got to be loving the current sorry state of our economy. My sis works as a brand rep and she said their WM sales are up.

Really? I thought I read somewhere that Wal*Mart engages in a forced degradation of design principles in their flyer design. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that there was something about the cheap crowd being afraid of stuff that doesn't look cheap, and the clutter makes the populace feel more comfortable.

Have you been in a WM lately? I try really hard not to go, but sometimes you just gotta. Anyway, our local WM got upscaled... light wood flooring, wider aisles, less clutter. And I was scared! I ran home and pulled a Kathy Ireland® duvet cover over my head.

LOL... it is reminiscent of the Vonnegut a-hole doodle. Perfect.

I feel the typeface, mixed case and the colors are an improvement... but what the hell is that "bug" supposed to be. It doesn't relate to the logo type at all. If it is supposed to be a start then they went from a 5 point to a 6 point. At least 5 points makes for a more visually interesting mark than 6 and it relates to the old star.

Did they go to logoworks?

Posted this in another forum:

I saw this yesterday and read a lot of comments where people were completely hating on it. Take away the fact that it is the blood-sucking hell-hole that is Walmart, I think it's a good move. The old mark is bold and bland with absolutely no character. The new look is a more refreshing typeface with a brighter blue and what I'm guessing is a "combination" star/sun. Like most, I'd like a little explanation as to what the asterisk actually is supposed to represent. As one person said on Brand New, it looks kind of like a sphincter. Overall I think its a nice approach for Walmart and it will appeal more to the woman consumer. I just hope they make updates to the blandness of the inside of their stores. Wishful thinking, I know.

Does anyone have a new Super Target near them, like one that opened in the past year? We have a new one that went up and I f'ng HATE IT. They completely went away from everything that I love about my old Target. Things like wide isles and large checkout lanes are what made my old Target great. The new isles are barely wide enough to get two grocery carts through. I used to be able to stand at one end of the isle and almost see what products were at the other end. Now I can't see sh$t that is more than halfway down the isle. The checkout lanes are awful now as well. They shortened them by almost half their original length so I literally have to grab another card and load bagged items in before I can completely unload my original cart.

Anyway, rant over.

It's a refreshing change for the massive low-price monger of a company. Yet it still doesn't keep me from remembering how they've been charged with treating their employees like crap and really bullying suppliers. Overall, it's a step in the right direction though.
