End the use of reflections, glossy effects, and using livetrace instead of actually illustrating, 3d logos
Minimize the use of rounded corners, Misprinted type fonts and free fonts from dafont... and the use of those OTHER default fonts that designers dread that shall not be named.

lets say goodbye to swirly, vector-based ornamental graphics.

big plushy 3d looking web 2.0 buttons should be over too. the internet is basically 2d, so why try so hard to deny that?

also, lets reduce the use of gradients, if possible.

I also would like to see that shiny "web 2.0" reflections below images thingy go away. I just never quite understood that...

As for what trends can stay, I have been liking the return to more handmade elements used in design, and would like to use more of it in my own work.

I agree with Megan about the handmade elements in design. I think that it brings out the whole concept that designers need to have that artistic and creative ability and aren't just one-trick designers, doing everything by computers. Plus, when something is handmade or has some handmade elements, it gives off the feeling that more thought and care were put into the designs.

I don't mind gradients. I mind bad gradients.

I would say Gotham needs to be re-evaluated. It's turning into the next Futura. I don't say the next Helvetica because Helvetica is sterile enough that it CAN be on anything. Gotham (and especially Futura) have a specific voice and need to be used accordingly. Gotham's voice isn't as strong as Futura is, but you get the point. People are using it as if it is Helvetica when it is not. Gotham is an excellent typeface (anything my H&FJ is) but it needs to be used with restraint.

Marble logos need to end.

Swooshes should have never began.

Handmade stuff is quickly becoming the next trend, infact, I think it is already here, and will be bastardized to hell and back just like everything else. Some of the masters have pushed it into the mainstream by doing it well, and it will eventually trickle down just like everything else. Think the David Carson effect. We will soon be begging for black helvetica on white again. WidgeCo anyone?

agreed. i like nice, subtle gradients using complementary colors. but gradients like red turning into green (ah christmas!) need to go. i guess gradients are like any other design element, always potential for overuse.

one more trend that's seen its day: the ink/paint grungy spill. when used responsibly, it can really work. but using it to sell insurance (i've seen it done folks) misses the mark.

here's a design trend that should end: misusing design trends (kinda redundant and goes without mention, eh?)

It's time for design competitons to die. No, not the ones like One Show, Addys, etc., but the kind that want people to submit designs so one can be chosen as the organization's logo, and the winner gets "great exposure," or perhaps as much as $500 (but more likely, $50). End this trend!

Thank You!

And lets end the trend of designing on spec as a condition of employment too. Can you get any more bastardly?

Let me start by saying that I don't read art and design publications on a regular basis, or follow the work of a lot of studios, so I don't have the slightest idea as to all of the trends out there. I avoid that stuff to keep my mind as open and as fresh as possible.

As for trends that I am aware of, the handmade approach is by far one of the best things that has happend to the design industry. I'm not saying that handmade work is appropriate for every project; I certianly would not scan hand-cut fabric for use on a CSS programmer's website...unless it supported the concept of course. But as a trend, it has certainly helped refresh the creative world. There are a lot of situations where handmade elements, to one degree or another, would be appropriate...especially in a world dominated by digital textures and "bells and whistles".

The radical overuse of HDR photography needs to go away. So many people do it badly and it's really played out.

I say, "down with computers, dag-nabit!"

Bring back sharp x-acto knives, hot wax, smelly rubber cement and border tape.

Amen to that. I just took part in a photography forum debate on that very topic. The ultra-HDR look has gotten old already, and it's going to look extremely dated in a couple of years. If I were creating an image with HDR, I would take great pains to be sure it didn't LOOK like HDR. But you're absolutely right, a lot of people overuse the techniques. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Actually, I would've liked to had the chance to use those tools. I was taught on the computer, but I think it would be interesting to go back in time. Don't get me wrong, I love my Mac, but I think if graphic design wasn't done on computers these days it would cut back on the "hackers" creating "graphic design" in their basements.

One design trend I would like to see end is designers who attempt to get a "look and feel" of a particular time period / element if design and just fail. Usually this is because the designer is too lazy to actually research the source material, work up some "mood boards", get an accurate color pallet and font selection. Not to mention figuring out a grid and the hierarchy of the design it self.

I don't really pay much attention to "design trends" nor do I worry if something is "played out" or not. I simply design and make sure that it is done right and has the appropriate elements to best serve the message. Web 2.0 glossy effects and reflections have a place in certain sites, I actually like to use them when it is called for. The same goes for fonts like Helvetica: use it when it will work.

Trends will come and go but design built off a solid understanding of the principles using concept and some restraint will always remain timeless.

>K. Von B.
