Art director Bridgid McCarren rolled up her sleeves and got some ink on her hands for the June 2009 issue of HOW. It seemed only natural to carry the hands-on approach on to the June 2009 cover.

Check out this exclusive Q&A with Bridgid:

What is your favorite element about this June cover?

B: The bird stencils from Ed Roth’s book “Stencil 101” worked beautifully for this cover. They give it so much activity by directing your eye around the page. Also, I think the color scheme came out really nicely. We wanted it to look fresh and summery—and I think it does.

What’s the main point that you wanted to drive home with this cover design?

B: We titled this issue “Designer’s Hands-on Creativity Guide” because so much of this issue is geared to give designers the opportunity to dig a little deeper into various stages of their creative processes. Inside, there’re fantastic team brainstorming exercises (page 62) to liven up your next meeting; our step-by-step printing techniques in the article “Print it Yourself” (page 48) show how easy it is to add a hand-printed element to your own work; plus, “Daily Deadlines” (page 56) challenges creatives to begin making art every day, like the five designers interviewed.

Did any challenges arise that you weren’t anticipating? If so, how did you overcome/steer around them?

B: Yes. Painting the HOW logo on the wall was a more difficult task than I anticipated. We had to be exact when determining the size of the logo as well as the height from the floor. Once we had it drawn out, painting it was the easy part.

Was it nice to get away from the computer and do a lot of hands-on work with this creativity issue?

B: Absolutely. Designers today are finding more creative ways to get away from the computer and do something with their hands, and I’m no exception. The printing techniques that Megan Patrick and I demonstrated in the feature “Print it Yourself” are easy ways for any creative to bring stencil, screen or block printing into their work.
