Also, I am again disappointed in the lack of industry organizational comment. For example, what benefit is a membership in AIGA if they aren't living by their mission and speaking up STRONGLY on our behalf?

AIGA, the professional association for design, stimulates thinking about design, demonstrates the value of design and empowers the success of designers at each stage of their careers. AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. Founded in 1914, AIGA remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design, and is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) educational institution.

Another one was:

"What about an ongoing list of fonts that are allowed (all the necessary rights and such)? That way we don't have to hunt too much for fonts to use."

I think I also read one entry a self-proclaimed "designer" recommended using fonts that everyone has on their computer like Verdana or Arial...*headdesk*

From their forum:

I look forward to this as I will be designing logos for general use as well. I already have some but not in Illustrator. This is good because this will push me to learn Illustrator (even though I use CorelDRAW, PaintShop, Fireworks).

Good on this person for wanting to learn Illustrator. Once that is done, they'll know logo design inside out!!!!

Here's another one:

Could there ever be a remote possibility that logos be designed in Photoshop and then iStock provide a paid for service to convert to vectors?

It's still raging in the main forum with hundreds of posts on a single thread.

I thought logos were targeted to a specific company they're designed for, how can you design generic logos? Makes no sense at all, they just want to make extra money.

Seems like the more indistinct market images become the easier it'll be to design something distinct and effective. There's also the phenomena of supply creating increased demand.

How is it that creatives have been told they're going to hell so that they look forward to the trip?

One would think from reading some of the comments that logo creation is just slapping some cheese on a cracker and calling it dinner.

Ugh.

LOL! I'll have my cheese with a fine glass of Mad Dog.

It basically sounds like glorified clip art and the only one who seems to win/benefit from this is the designer who is selling their work, I can totally see designers uploading a bunch of old stuff that failed to make past the first round to the site.

So I've been following the istockphoto discussion on their forum (up to 71 pages now) and one person claims that you can make a logo in 6 minutes. Good lord, graphic design has been reduced to 6 minutes of your time and a $100 price tag.

You can make something generic in 6 minutes. Remember, they don't have a real client. They could put two letters together and make a logo in their minds.

I'd be willing to bet they've already heard the arguments against this. I'd also be willing to bet they couldn't give a sh!t. If it makes them money, they'll do it, if it doesn't, they won't.

You're their customers - boycott 'em.

That's exactly what I plan to do.

Maybe we could start a list here (or in another thread) of other sites to give our business.

I already cancelled my account - which is funny because now I can't comment on the iStock forum. I have to depend on nicillustration to by my proxy voice. I was going to keep my account with iStock until the actual plan rolled out to see how badly it would hurt the design business - but after posting my comments and reading the comments left by their contributors, the general disdain they had for designers' concern about this issue was just, frankly, insulting, especially considering that graphic designers are probably their largest client base. Not one of our questions or concerns were addressed by iStockphoto. I did email iStockphoto telling them to cancel my account and why I was leaving - I finally got a reply:

"I am sorry to hear you are upset. We did not intend to replace the graphic designer in the industry, we feel that our markets are different.

There will never be a way to replace a custom business logo with stock, however there is a niche market for small, local businesses, groups, organizations, or even community sports teams, that want something to put on their letterhead. We think of this as an opportunity to market those rejected logos that never made it for some other project.

I have closed your account as per your request."

Anyway, back to the real reason I was posting...Dreamstime is a good alternative choice.

Dreamstime is also a lot cheaper and most of the stock on istock is also there.
